International House


International House is home to 171 students and is located at 27 Whitaker Place, Auckland City—only a few minutes away from the University General Library.

About International House

Situated in gardens with mature trees and adjacent to the City Campus, the buildings of International House have received an award for enduring architecture. Brick and rimu finishes in the interior and large windows in every bedroom add to the appeal. Clive Boock (Head of Hall) and Jonathan Walter (Assistant Head of Hall) offer you personal support while you live in the Hall.

  • The facilities include a computer lab, library, music practice room with two pianos, common rooms with televisions and a well-equipped games room with big-screen Sky Television.
  • An all-weather floodlit outdoor court for tennis, basketball and volleyball, plus a games room with Foozeball table and table tennis, provide ample recreational choices.

Summer vacation accommodation is available at International House for current residents, summer school students, and visitors. Conditions apply.

Rooms
 

  • Your accommodation is in a comfortable fully-furnished bedroom. You can choose between twin-share or single bedrooms.
  • There are 152 single rooms, 6 twin-share rooms and 4 twin-share deluxe rooms.
  • You share communal bathrooms/toilets and showers throughout with 5–12 other residents. The 4 twin-share deluxe rooms have private bathrooms.
  • Your room has broadband internet access through the University ResNet system at no additional cost.
  • We provide a blanket, pillow, and bed linen at no additional cost. Please bring your own towels.

Catering

  • International House is a fully catered Hall and you can enjoy three nutritious meals a day in the dining hall.
  • You can choose a vegetarian, halal or meat option at lunch and dinner.
  • You can arrange for a packed lunch and late dinner if required.
  • There are formal dinners and organised functions throughout the year as well as suppers throughout the exam periods.
  • You can use the fridges and microwaves in the common rooms for making snacks.
  • Vending machines provide other snacks.

Study

  • A study room and reference library are provided.
  • The computer room has six computers, A4 laser jet printer and photocopier (charges apply).
  • Your room has broadband internet access through the University ResNet system at no additional cost.
  • Academic mentoring sessions and informal study groups are available to help you study.
     

Entertainment and recreation

  • Take part in the social and recreation events programme organised by the residential management team. Recreation facilities for your use include:
  • Music practice room with two pianos (one baby grand).
  • Games room equipped with big-screen Sky television and three common rooms with televisions.
  • Darkroom.
  • All-weather floodlit tennis court, with basketball and two volleyball courts.
  • Games room with pool table, Foozeball table and table tennis.
  • Squash court.
  • The University Recreation Centre is nearby - membership is included in your fees.
  • Auckland Domain a 10 minute walk away.


Services

  • Bathrooms and communal areas are serviced daily.
  • Utilities such as electricity and water are included in your fees.
  • User-pays laundry with ironing facilities, drying room and external clothes lines are available for your use.
  • Telephones for local calls are located throughout the buildings.
  • Facsimile facility available at reception.
  • There is no parking available on the property. Limited public pay-and-display street parking available.
  • Lockable bike shed.


General

  • Your swipe card gives you access to the Hall.
  • You may not smoke in or around the Hall. (The University of Auckland has been a smoke-free environment since 2010.)
  • There is no wheelchair access.


Pastoral care

  • The Head of Hall, Clive Boock, is charged with your welfare. He is available during office hours and also lives on site.
  • The Assistant Head of Hall, Jonathan Walter is available during office hours.
  • Residential Assistants live on-site and are located throughout the buildings.
  • A duty person is available 24 hours.
