Huia Residence


Huia Residence is located at 110 Grafton Road on the corner of Park and Grafton Roads - on the Grafton Campus and a 15 minute walk to the City Campus General Library. Close to the Grafton and Newmarket shopping precincts and the Auckland Domain, Huia Residence is home to 319 students.

About Huia Residence

Alison Reay (Head of Hall), Jacob Waitere (Assistant Head of Hall), two Residential Supervisors and the team of eleven Residential Assistants offer you personal support while you live in the Hall, and they will arrange a variety of social and recreational events for you to join throughout the year.

  • You can enjoy the use of study/dining room, music room, Sky television lounge and games room.
  • The garden, with a summer house and barbecue area, is a popular outdoor relaxation area.
  • You can choose to cook for yourself or join one of the meal plans available during the year.

Rooms

  • Your accommodation is in a comfortable fully furnished single bedroom.
  • You are provided with a small personal refrigerator in your room.
  • There are 30 rooms on each floor, occupying two hallways. Each floor has two bathrooms (single gender), acommunal kitchen and laundry facilities.
  • Your room has broadband internet access through the University ResNet system at no additional cost.
  • You can obtain a linen pack on arrival which includes a mattress protector, two sheets, duvet inner and cover, pillow and pillow case and two towels.
  • You will be required to pay an additional $100 deposit on your arrival which is refunded upon return of your key and linen pack in a clean and undamaged condition at the end of your stay.

Catering

  • You can cook your own meals using the self-catering facilities in the shared kitchen on every floor, or in the communal kitchen on the ground floor.
  • You will need to provide your own plates, cutlery and kitchen utensils for cooking.
  • You are provided with a small personal refrigerator in your room.
  • The shared kitchen on each floor closes at 10pm every night but the large communal kitchen on the ground floor is open 24 hours a day.
  • Use the small pantry next to the common room on each floor for coffee-making 24 hours a day.
  • Vending machines provide other snacks.
  • Alternatively you can choose to sign up for one of the two optional meal plans below:

    • Meal Plan A:
      Seven days a week: one evening meal per day.
      Indicative cost: $56 per week.
       
    • Meal Plan B:
      Seven days a week: one evening meal per day.
      Five days a week: breakfast and a packed lunch Monday to Friday.
      Indicative cost: $98 per week.


Study

  • You can use the University computers in the communal lounge on the ground floor, as well as a printer and photocopier (wireless connectivity) on the ground floor.
  • Your room has broadband internet access through the University ResNet system at no additional cost.
  • Study individually or in a group in the dining hall during non-meal hours.
  • The academic support programme includes mentoring and group study sessions to help you study.

Entertainment and recreation

Take part in the social and recreation events programme organised by the residential management team. Recreation facilities for your use include:

  • Common rooms with Sky and free to air channels television and a DVD player on each floor.
  • You can borrow one of the over 400 DVD’s on loan.
  • Lounge with a big screen television, pool table, Foozeball table and table tennis on the ground floor.
  • You can borrow a Nintendo, PlayStation and various board games.
  • You can play one of the two pianos located in the music room or in the ground floor common area.
  • Relax in the garden, summer house or barbeque area.
  • The University Recreation Centre a 10 minute walk away—membership is included in your fees.
  • Auckland Domain is a 5 minute walk away.

 

Services

  • All communal areas are cleaned daily.
  • Utilities such as electricity and water are included in your fees.
  • There is an ironing area and user-pays laundry available for your use on each floor.


Parking

Limited parking on a first-come first served basis available at $20 a week, payment in advance.


General

  • Your swipe card gives you access to the Hall.
  • You may not consume or keep alcohol on the residential premises.
  • There is no wheelchair access in the Hall.
  • You may not smoke in the Hall. (The University of Auckland has been a smoke-free environment since 2010.)
  • The Reception area at Huia is staffed 27 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • On-site maintenance personnel available 5 days a week.


Pastoral care

  • The Head of Hall, Alison Reay and the Assistant Head of Hall, Jacob Waitere are charged with your welfare.
  • Adrienne Sattler, the Huia Building Manager, looks after the property.
  • Residential Assistants live on each floor.
