Huia Residence

Huia is a purpose-built student accommodation facility, conveniently located an easy ten-minute walk from the City Campus across the Grafton gully. It is self-catered. A Residential Manager and a team of Residential Assistants (senior assistants) provide support to you, and organise social events.

Accommodation is in comfortable single bedrooms. There are 30 rooms on each floor, occupying two hallways. Each floor has two bathrooms (single gender).

General

• Security-tag access for residents
• Strict alcohol-free policy
• Smoking permitted only outside buildings in designated areas. Bedrooms, balconies and common areas are strictly non-smoking. (From 2010 all University campuses will be smoke free environments).

Catering

• Self-catered residence
• Meal plan available for dinners seven nights a week @ $56 a week - vegetarian, halal and meat options available
• You need to provide your own kitchen utensils for cooking
• Personal fridge in every bedroom
• Shared kitchen on each floor (closes 11pm every night)
• Small pantry on each floor for coffee-making 24 hours a day
• Large communal kitchen on ground floor open 24 hours a day

Study

• Three booths with internet facilities in communal lounge on ground floor
• Data ports provided in each room with connection to Resnet

Entertainment and recreation

• Lounge with a television and DVD player on each floor
• Lounge with big screen television and pool table on ground floor
• Outdoor garden and BBQ area
• University Recreation Centre a ten minute walk away
• Auckland Domain a five minute walk away

Services

• Utilities such as electricity and water included
• Laundry with coin operated washer and dryer and ironing area on each floor
• A linen pack which includes a mattress protector, two sheets, duvet inner and cover, pillow and pillow case and two towels, is provided. The $100 deposit (including a key deposit) is refundable on return of clean and undamaged linen and a complete key set, and your room being left clean and in good order.

Parking

• Limited parking on a first-come first served basis available at $20 a week, payment in advance
• A car park will be allocated and a sticker that must be displayed at all times will be issued to prevent your car being towed away.
• All unregistered cars without stickers will be towed at the owner's expense.

Pastoral care

• A Residential Manager, Alison Reay, is charged with your welfare and is supported by Megan Walker, the Operations Manager.
• Residential Assistants are in residence.
• The Huia Manager looks after the property.

Academic fellows and interns visiting the University for a short period (staying for two weeks or longer) can book a room at Huia (depending on availability) at the weekly rate of $186, plus an administration fee of $75 on booking.
